Sloping sanctuary garden

An artist’s garden inspiration deep in the woods

A zoomed in view of a hand drawn axonometric drawing of the garden layout

An artist with a steeply sloping garden asked for our help to design a private sanctuary that inspired her to paint, influenced by her beautiful woodland surroundings.

Working with the natural contours of the land, we created distinctive spaces to linger at different levels of the previously impassable lawn. Improved paths and steps give easier access through new areas of shade-tolerant planting.

Extending the terrace and adding a climber-clad pergola gives our client more room to paint in peace.

A sunken, curved seating area nestles into the land giving views across a wildflower meadow and space to enjoy the gentle trickling of a wildlife pond made from a reclaimed trough.

Alongside a potager kitchen garden hugging the sunniest side of the house, a bespoke shepherd’s hut offers luxury accommodation to family and paying guests.
